So I'm pushing myself to get back into the swing of things and so far am getting back on track slowly but surely (see my previous post). In addition to loving my games and players, one of my driving motivations for pushing through my crazy is a desire to do some old-school World of Darkness. So here is a little preview of my Vampire the Masquerade play-by-post, DMV Nights!
It's the Early 90s...
The game is going to start in the early 90s for a couple of reasons. First, that's when VtM was originally produced and I want to recover the attitude of the day some. To this end I am putting together a YouTube playlist for inspiration and to out me and any of my players and readers into the era. On a more practical note, the other reason is because quite simply: theass availability of smartphones adds extra challenges for the Storyteller (yes, I'm using their terminology). Having information available anywhere at any time can create issues. Not to mention thinking about the average Toreador's Twitter feed makes my head spin. One final reason for bringing it back a few decades is that this is a Vampire game. Torpor and years of downtime are absolutely possible, so this gives the group room to play with time flowing past them.
My Setting
I am NOT using the official sourcebook of the city I've chosen, but instead a different vision of the Brujah and Venture fighting a shadow war while the Tremere and Nosferatu try and maintain the status quo. I wanted an area familiar to me personally, so the DMV. The DMV is the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, more or less (depending on exactly who you ask), everything within the Capital Beltway.
NO POLITICS!
Just because the game is set in DC and we just went through a massive election doesn't mean that I want real world politics bleeding into my game. There is an in-game mechanism intended to keep it out, The Potomac Compact. An agreement backed by the Camarilla which restricts the local vampires from interfering with the human national government using vampiric abilities.
Supernatural Troubleshooters
I am planning on a variety of side stories, intended to be customized for character driven plots and random happenings to add spice. There is a major storyline I have planned, however, so it won't be totally sandbox.
Without going into too much detail (and blowing some already drafted exposition posts!), the main sorry arc has the troupe working for the Prince, at least initially, investigating recent events with a potential supernatural angle. The Compact and post-war growth of the region has lead to a few decades of stability, and the Prince is looking to stop any future trouble before it begins. As the chronicle continues, they will find the trouble already began!
Last Steps Before Recruiting
I have a few steps before I open recruitment. Some stock maps, more details on local NPCs, and some crunch for the first story. I hoping to get a recruitment thread up at Paizo's boards by the end of the week!
